VDE Applications

Viking's VDE software is used in a variety of applications in addition to replacing traditional high speed "heads down" data entry machines. For instance, transaction files for other computer systems may be created, such as payroll, market research, accounting, clinical trials, engineering design, and inventory control.

Files to be loaded to a DBMS can also be prepared with VDE, as was the case of the key-entered data from the U.S. Census. Also use it to offload data input tasks from mainframes.

FORMS Development Facility

The Viking Forms Painter is used interactively to create and modify screen "Forms" that define data entry jobs. The full-screen system is so intuitive and easy to use that end users and data entry operators can design and develop their own jobs.

Menu System

Viking makes wide use of drop-down menus, which are easily customized for unique needs. VDE can even launch other programs, provide additional security, and maintain an audit trail.

ISAM File Support

VDE provides fast on-line access to keyed Indexed Sequential Access Method (ISAM) data files and tables.

Customization

VDE is an open system. Using the optional API and associated tools, you can easily customize VDE to meet requirements of the most demanding applications. Use standard programming languages like COBOL, FORTRAN, and C—no need to learn specialized "data entry languages."

File Reformatting

General purpose 4GL reformat capabilities let you take advantage of new technology and techniques to increase data entry productivity, while at the same time produce output files that meet the specifications of existing systems.
